Ancient city of Anantnag

Anantnag is an ancient city which came into existence as early as 5000 BC making it one of the oldest urban human settlements in the whole world.

The local mostly referred to Anantnag by its traditional name, Islamabad. Situated along the bank of the Liddar River in the Anantnag District, it is the second largest city of the Kashmir Valley.

The city is known for sulphur spring. It has also temple of Shiva and Radha-Krishna. Pilgrims and tourist are attracted to Pahalgam in the Liddar Valley leading to the Amaranth caves.

With its numerous springs, some of which have medicinal properties. Anantnag presents a picturesque look.

On the right bank of the Jhelum, about half-way between the towns of the Srinagar and Anantnag stood the capital of the famous King Avanti Verma, called after his name as Avantipur. His reign extended from the year 858 to 883.
