City of Avantipur was founded by King Avantivarman, a king of Kashmir from 855-883 and is located just north of Srinagar. King Avantivarman built many Hindu temples dedicated to both Vishnu and Shiva and Buddhist monasteries
He built two magnificent temples at Avantipur namely Avantisvamin and Avantisvara. Never before were the Kashmiris so happy and prosperous as during the 28 years’ of Avantivarman Under his benign rule, Kashmir became a land of piety, peace, and plenty.
He brought political stability and economic prosperity to his kingdom. His death was followed by a civil war among several descendants of Utpala for the throne.
