The city lies along the Tawi River, south of Srinagar. Once the capital of the Dogra Rajput dynasty, it became part of Ranjit Singh’s domain in the 19th century.
Many historian and locals believed that Jammu was founded by Raja Jambulochan in the 14th century BC. During one of his hunting campaigns, he reached the Tawi River he saw a goat and a lion drinking water at the same place.
Considering the place auspicious, he commanded that palace be built at this place and city was founded around it.
In ancient times, the region was under the Mauryas, Kushans and Guptas and after 480 AD, the area was dominated by Hephthalites and ruled from Kapisa and Kabul.
The Shahi dynasty reigned the area form 670-1000 AD which was ended by Mahmood Ghaznavi.
The Dogras are believed to be the descendents of migrants who settled the region from Rajputana many centuries ago. The Dogra capital, Jammu is considered a holy Hindu city due to the number of temples and place of Hindu learning.
Temple art began a long tradition of Dogra painting and decoration. In 1675, the Dogra Raja Pal of Basholi was the first to patronize artist regularly.
