Hwando served as the second capital of the Korean Goguryeo Dynasty. Goguryeo was an ancient kingdom governing a vast territory in North-East Asia from 37 BC until 668 AD., when it was overthrown and perished. The kingdom is commonly agreed to have occupied territories that are now recognized as Manchuria in northern China and the Korean Peninsula.
Weina Rock fortress was built by Yuri of Goguryeo in 3 AD. Weina Rock fortress later was renamed to Hwando by Sansang of Goguryeo
In February 246 AD tens of thousands of troops of an invader nation attacked Goguryeo both from the north and the south. The Goguryeo forces annihilated and captured some 6000 of the enemy troops in two battles in the Piryu Stream and in the Ryangmaek Valley.
In November, 342 A.D. Murong Huang from Murong clan led a strong army of 40,000 himself and invaded Goguryeo.
According to this record, Goguryeo suffered utter defeat against the Yan dynasty and momentarily lost their capital city. The Yan army pillaged the palace and returned to their kingdom capturing 50,000 residents of the city.
